Histon v Matlock Town

F.A Cup 2nd Qualifying Round
30th September 2006

Score: Histon 0 Matlock Town 1

A depleted Matlock Town produced a solid performance to take Histon out of this years F.A Cup, Town had been rocked by injuries following a midweek fixture at AFC Telford, the home side also had to re-shuffle the side, with Jamie Barker being forced to sit out the tie due to an injury, also missing was Matty Haniver who took his place on the bench, being replaced by Steve Jackman.

Early on the Derbyshire side tested home keeper, Lance Key, who got down well to push aside a low drive for a corner, the game started at quite a pace, with both sides pushing the ball around, but it was the home side that nearly took the lead, a quickly taken free kick from captain Ada Cambridge slipped in Ian Cambridge, Cambridge managed to curl the ball enough around Town keeper, Andy Richmond, who go the slightest of touches to divert the ball on to the upright, and away from the goal.

On 34 minutes Histon won a corner, from that corner Gary Webster broke free down the Histon flank, a slip from defender Erkan Okay let Webster in on goal, with just Key to beat, Webster shot down low, unable to hold onto the ball the keeper pushed the ball away, first to react was Tom Cahill who scored from closer range unchallenged.

Another corner for the home side saw defender Matthew Mitchell-King have a powerful header tipped over by Richmond, with the home side looking to get back on level terms it was the woodwork that saved Town once more, a drop of the shoulder was enough to give Ada Cambridge enough space to fire in a thunderous drive, but the ball cannoned off the cross bar and was helped away.

Just as half time came Cahill had a chance to double the lead, but Key saved the effort, the second half was much the same as the first, very even, with the home side going close with another effort from Ian Cambridge, which went over, while defender Gareth Williams hooked a header of the goal line from Cambridge, as the home side pushed the gaps opened in defence, a fierce drive was saved by Key, while the next effort came off the underside of the bar and was half cleared by the defence, as the final whistle came it was the Derbyshire side that deserved to be in the hat, while the home side looked around dejected.
