Robbie Nightingale opened the scoring for the Stutes after just 15 seconds after good work down the left from Jamie Barker. This provided the platform for a solid and enterprising performance from Histon. Jamie Barker doubled the lead, tapping in after a corner had not been cleared. Unfortunately Nightingale had to be replaced on 24 minutes with Drew Roberts coming on. Drew took up the right wing and John Kennedy switched to central midfield, but there was no let up in the visitors attacking play and Barker added his second goal five minutes before half time. Welling then made a double substitution, but Histon could have gone in to half-time four goals up with a clever Ian Cambridge cross evading not only the Welling keeper but also Bloomfield coming in at the far post.
The home side came out the blocks quickly in the second half, playing down the slope. The Stutes had to soak up lots of pressure and Welling’s first goal came just after the hour when Joe Vines knocked in the rebound after a free-kick had hit the bar. As the half went on Histon had weathered the Wings’ storm and had more of the play. A deflected Adrian Cambridge shot after a corner made the game safe for the Stutes. But in stoppage time Vines scored his second to give the home side a little consolation.
