Our Under 9's travelled to Norwich City , our Under 12's were at home to Kidderminster Harriers, our Under 13's away to Burton Albion whilst our 14's at home entertained Romulus from the Midlands. Finally our Under 15's were away at Atherstone Town.
The scholars also got underway with training every day and will soon begin their academic programme at the Hertford Regional College.
It was a very busy weekend and team Managers Adam Clements, Anthony Graves, Brian Page , Jake Hammond and Simon Day were very pleased with the performances of the squads.
It is not our intention to put results on the web as they are misleading and tell you little when the main emphasis is on improving individual players and developing them. This is not to say winning is not important - all players should want to win but at young ages fun and player development is the key.
If anyone is interested they can always look on our league web site which is an excellent one called the Midland Junior Premier League.
Next weekend the team head off to various parts of the country whilst the U.13 and U.15's are at home. This month we play at St. Ivo Outdoor Centre but in October we have home games at Emmanuel College Sports Grounds on Wilberforce Road and we still seek a quality saturday morning pitch to meet our leagues requirements. If anyone can help please contact Peter Reeve on 07954401373. Peter has done great work for the academy over the summer seraching out training venues and pitches and we are just one home pitch short now !.
Kit Carson described the tournament last year as the finest that we could send our boys to play in. It is not only a high level of football but the organisation and the quality of teams from many countries make it a real challenge. When the tournament first began Kit was an ardent supporter of it and sent his teams there at a time when it was not fashionable to send teams to Derry. Many strong links with Derry have resulted.
The Foyle Cup is tough and our team in spite of playing excellent football lost a place in the final rounds on goal difference. However, the Foyle provides plenty of quality football and so the disapointment was soon ended as they went into the Foyle Cup Plate competition instead.
Michael Hutton has treated Histon Football Club with great consideration this year and the thanks of the club are extended to him and his wonderful team. We hope very much that we can go again and reach the final stages of this great international competition.
Chris pictured here took our U.14's to Bordeaux recently with Anthony Graves and also to the Elite Cup in Denmark in May. Wife Melissa worked hard at every game with the Under 16s last Season organising refreshments for the home and away teams at Pembroke whilst son Duran is one of our most reliable players at either left back or left midfield. A true Histon family and so time for us to put a little back. VOTE CHELSEY !!
Our main trials were held in April of this year but this extra trial is for those who were unable to make the April trials. Some players have also said that they did not do themselves justice at the last trials and would like another chance.
If you wish to attend please e mail the Academy () with your name, date of birth and position and we will let you have details of time and place and what to bring.
We do not have plans for further trials at younger age groups although if you e mail us here and address it for the attention of Adam Clements he will get back to you.
Histon Academy.
The Tournament of the South West ( Timso) attracted teams from all over France plus Poland and Algerian and English (us)
participants.
The boys did superbly well and lost the semi final on penalties. The cruel nature of football was shown by the fact that the
boys never lost a game, never conceded a goal and yet went out but finished a very creditable third.
They also won the Sportsmanship trophy proving once again that Histon not only can be successful on the field but can also be
successful in the right way.
Rickie Knaepel pictured with the trophies was voted Histon player of the tournament although with just a small squad all of the
team did superbly well.
Histon joined other English clubs such as Norwich City & West Bromwich Albion as well as neighbours Cambridge United in what proved to be a brilliant event.
Histon started well beating the Swedes of Husie 3-0 and then Halmstadt 5-1 before meeting the favourites Danish giants Brondby . With a much superior goal difference Histon needed really only to draw with Brondby to knock them out of the tournament. In a fine match they drew 0-0 and Brondby knew that this would end their chances of winning the group in which only the top team went through.
In Brondby’s final match they scraped a win and so all Histon had to do was win by 1 goal against the groups weakest team Naesby. They took an early lead when Ross Woolford scored and then an appalling refereeing decision gave Naeby a farcical penalty in injury time in the first half. This completely unnerved Histon who threw the second half away by panicking and suddenly making mistakes that had not made all tournament. Brondy could not believe their luck and went through and won the tournament.
Histon licked their wounds and in the positional games for teams who finished second in the groups beat Boo of Sweden and then met Aalborg the host club for 5th place. Another brilliant match and it ended with a 1-1 draw which then went to penalties which in true English style Histon lost in spite of Michael Winstone in goal saving two penalties.
Brian Page & Chris Reynolds did a great job with the team and they returned home having learned a great deal from a truly excellent tournament.
